It’s always difficult to keep up your momentum in school halfway through your
semester or quarter. There are so many choices and priorities competing for your time.
You probably feel like you are stretched too thin and you may find yourself feeling
stressed out. The material you’re learning in class is probably starting to get a lot more
complicated and there are lots of test and essays due during the same weeks. You’re
not the only one who may feel like it’s difficult to keep up with the material and keep
your grades up at this point. Here are a few ways to pick up your speed and regain
momentum and interest in school.
. 1. Plan Ahead. You can buy or make a wall calendar or personal planner. This will help
you organize your thoughts. Mark the dates when assignments, midterms, finals,
and other tests and quizzes are due. Also, you might want to mark the due dates
of term papers, essays, and other projects so you can see everything on one
calendar. Try to avoid writing stuff down on random sheets of paper, because
you will probably lose the paper and forget what you have to turn in. Next, note
the other time commitments you have, like baseball practice, band rehearsal, or
student organization meetings.
. 2. Stay ahead of the game. One of the biggest ways to gain momentum and not get
overwhelmed is to work ahead, rather than behind schedule. If you are falling
behind, communicate that to you teachers and parents so they can help you
figure out solutions to getting back on track. This is a better option than talking
to them when your grades are bad because then it’s too late. Your teacher will
be much more willing to help you if they see that you are concerned and you
came to them for help.
. 3. Pay Attention. You’ve probably made new friends this school year in your classes,
which has caused you to pay less attention in class. Whether you agree or not, it
is proven that paying attention class results in better results (i.e. better grades).
Actively listening, participating, and taking notes in class will undoubtedly give
you better end results. You’ll find yourself remembering more information when
it comes to studying and preparing for exams.
