What to Wear on a Job Interview

What to Wear On Your Job Interview

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times… “First impressions are lasting impressions.” In particular, job interviews are the first and hopefully not the last time that the employer sees you. There are many things to keep in mind when preparing your attire for a job interview.

Girls - Dont’s

Do not wear Heavy Makeup because it can be distracting. Remember you are interviewing for a job not going out with friends.

Open-toed shoes normally do not have a business style. Open-toe shoes are more casual and should be left for church or dinner.

Short Skirts can be provocative and should not be worn to a job interview. Make sure that if you wear a business skirt it is at least knee length. To be safe, try wearing a pants suit.

Visible Tattoo and/or piercings should never be displayed during a business interview. That is unprofessional and may leave the wrong impression with the person interviewing you.

Clingy or low cut tops draw the wrong attention. You want the employer to listen to what you are saying, not be distracted. Beyond the employer, you should make personal judgments that tell you this is inappropriate for the workplace.

Girls- Do's

Wear modest colors such as black, navy blue, or beige. These colors will allow the focus to be on you and what you have to say.

Let your face be seen. Hair in your face is a big distraction to someone who is trying to get to know what you are all about. If your hair is in your face, you are normally constantly touching it and moving it out of your eyes. This may tell the employer that you are not interested.

Think church? Yes, think about church when you are planning your attire for a job interview. Business casual attire is appropriate for interviews in retail, food services, and secretarial positions.

Get approval! I know you may not want to ask your parents or grandparents what you should wear, but they can offer great advice. Think about it, they are probably around the same age as the personal that will be interviewing you.

Be well groomed. This includes ironing and washing your outfit the night before. Let them know you care.
