As you mature you will start to notice changes “down there.” This can be for a number of reasons, including your diet and sexual activity. Because many of you have sex without you mother or father knowing when things seem to change you do not know what is normal and when there is a problem and you are too afraid to ask. This month we are going to discuss some of what to is going on with your vagina.
If you have changed your diet or engaged in sexual activity you may have noticed a vaginal discharge. A vaginal discharge is just that, something that is coming out of your vagina. The important thing here is to know that different types of discharge can mean different things are going on with you.
Here are the different types of discharge you may notice:
White:Thick, white discharge is normal at the beginning and end of your cycle. If you are itching this is not the normal discharge that some women have and could indicate that you have a yeast infection.
Clear and stretchy discharge is "fertile" and means you are ovulating. In short means this it the time you are most likely to get pregnant.
Clear and watery discharge may be seen at different times in your cycle and can be more heavy after exercising.
Yellow or Green discharge is a sign of infection, especially if it is thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or smells bad. If you see this you should go to the gynecologist and get checked for STD’s. Please be mindful that there may be just a tint of green or yellow not a dark color that is always easily noticeable.
Brown discharge might occur right after your period. This is just your body "cleaning out" your vagina. Old blood looks brown.
Spotting Blood/Brown Discharge sometimes happens
when you are ovulating. It is common early on in pregnancy to have spots of a brownish discharge at the time your period would normally come. If you have spotting at the time of your normal period rather than your usual full period, and you have had unprotected sex you should take a pregnancy test.
