Will Condoms Solve Everything?
Does using a condom always mean you will be safe? Can it guarantee you won’t end up with a baby or catch an STD?
Today we are going to talk about 99.9%. There is a reason condoms say on the package they are 99.9 % effective when used properly, and that reason is so they can;t be sued the other 0.01% of the time when the condom doesn’t work. Let me break this down. For each 100 people that have sex and use a condom CORRECTLY one person will still be at risk for catching an STD, getting pregnant, or contracting HIV. So does a condom always mean you will be safe? No, it doesn’t.
If you are using a condom that is old, has been kept in a pocket or wallet, is used with some form of lubrication, is torn out of the package, or you do not “pull out” before ejaculation the effectiveness of the condom drops dramatically or becomes obsolete.
So, what if you do use a condom correctly? There are no tares, and you did everything you were supposed to? Are you safe then? Well, technically there is a 99.9% chance you are safe from everything you can catch while wearing a condom and pregnancy. However, there are several STD’s we will discuss in our “What you Don’t Know about Sex” section in future issues that you are still at risk for. Not to mention some people have STD’s for months or even years before they realize it and by then they have passed it to someone else.
Here are some important facts you should think about before jumping in the bed:
65 million people in the U.S. have incurable STD’s
At least 1 in 4 Americans will contract an STD in their lifetime
Teenagers make up 1/4 of all new STD infections
Herpes is the most common STD in the U.S. effecting 45 Million people
Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B are the only vaccine treatable STD’s
