At some point, we all want to make our own choices and find our own “way.” As a result, you probably talk to your friends or schoolmates more than you talk to your parents. Take a second, and ask yourself why it is so east to talk to your friends….. It’s because you are in constant communication. You have established a certain level of comfort and you are willing to share a plethora of information. If you want to, which you should, establish a better line of communication with your parents, try some very easy steps:
1.) Talk about everyday stuff… every day. Don’t wait until something drastic happens in your life before you include your parents. Your parents should not be there just for damage control, because there shouldn’t be any damage if you include them throughout the process and not just the outcome. The more you do something, the easier it gets. So start practicing now. Trust that your parents will want to listen to whatever you have to say.
2.) It’s never too late.If you feel that you and you parents relationship is not as strong as it could be, do you use this as an excuse to draw yourself farther away from them. Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “Better late than never” or “Right now is the best time.” You have to start somewhere… why not now?
3.) Pick a good time to talk. Make sure to keep in mind that parents have responsibilities just like you do. If they are on the phone, paying bills on the computer, or discussing something important don’t you try and discuss something with them that’s important. If you are talking to your friends and he or she is upset, you don’t want your parents coming in your room and asking you questions or telling you to go do a chore. Just be respectful, and choose a good time for everyone to talk, such as dinner, family time, or during car rides.
